How Many DX Codes?

QUESTION

Your documentation states that the groupers currently only utilize up to nine diagnosis codes. Are you planning on increasing that number to 25 in conjunction with the recent changes CMS has implemented?

ANSWER

Our ICD9-based DRG Assignment Engine supports up to 15 diagnosis codes. Our ICD10 prototype currently supports 30 diagnosis codes, but we only commit to supporting the expected 25.

  1. Same question but instead regarding ICD procedure codes. CMS also expanded this to 25.

  2. Oops, we should have answered both questions at the same time; we apologize for that.

  3. Now that CMS has pushed ICD10 (proposed) to 10/1/2014 (http://www.cms.gov/apps/media/press/factsheet.asp?Counter=4330), is there any possibility that forthcoming ICD9-based DRG Assignment engines will modified to support 25 diagnoses and 25 procedures?

This is an issue because of a need to insure HIPPA compliance with 5010 electronic standards based on the CMS mandated compliance date of 7/1/2012 (https://www.cms.gov/ICD10/Downloads/EnforcementDiscretionAnnouncement.pdf) and mirroring the current and future ICD9 CMS grouper versions (https://www.cms.gov/transmittals/downloads/R2028CP.pdf)
